Blast halts operations of Baumgarten gas hub–Gas Connect Austria

MOSCOW, Dec 12 (PRIME) – An explosion halted operations at one of Europe’s largest gas hub, Austrian Baumgarten, operator Gas Connect Austria said in a statement on Tuesday.

“An explosion hit the Baumgarten gas hub at about 9:00 a.m. All rescue services were informed promptly and works on the emergency site began. We now know that one person is missing and 12 were injured. Medical aid was immediately provided to the injured,” the company said.

Baumgarten pumps about a third of Russian gas going to Europe.

Gazprom Export, an export arm of Russian gas producer Gazprom, is redirecting its gas flows. “Gazprom Export is aware of the accident on the Austrian gas distribution hub in Baumgarten. The company is working on redirection of gas flows and is doing its best to ensure no disruptions in gas supplies to the clients at this destination,” the company said.
